A Donald Ross Homecoming

Essex County Club opened with nine holes in 1893, and soon became the sixth member of the USGA. Some 20 years later, a Scotsman with a young family and a bright future accepted the job as head professional. After a decade-long overhaul of the course, including a three-year stint living behind the 15th tee, Donald Ross left Essex with a layout that still stands up to the very best in American golf. After hosting the Massachusetts Amateur in August, Essex welcomes the Broken Tee Society in October.

Pick Your Poison

Though he’s come to be known for Pinehurst’s domed greens, Ross’s bag of tricks reaches far deeper. The exposed bedrock, tall fescue, stacked bunkers, greenside mounds and turbulent landforms of Essex can bewilder the careless golfer at every turn. The rollercoaster nature of the final two holes has to be experienced to be believed, and the Tom Doak/Bruce Hepner restoration allows Essex to play open, firm and bouncy, exactly as Ross intended more than a century ago.
