Upon the Heath
Some of the finest inland golf courses on earth grew out of sand, heather and pine an hour southwest of London, and for Coyne Cup X, we’ll see six of them: The Addington, Walton Heath, Sunningdale, Hankley Common, St. George’s Hill and The Berkshire. These clubs proved that a course didn’t need the sea to be great, and their tee sheets are among the most coveted in England. Since 2016, TGJ Editor Tom Coyne has organized the Coyne Cup, shepherding a rotating cast of golf seekers through some of the world’s greatest courses, from Ireland’s dunes to upstate New York. The tenets of the Cup are simple: Fun golf. Rare golf. Friendly golf. Fierce golf. It’s a credo that fits the Broken Tee Society like a premium leather glove, and every member is invited to register for this Ryder Cup-style event. Plus-ones are invited too, on a non-golf itinerary running the best of London and the Surrey countryside while the matches play out.

Trip Itinerary
Sunday, July 11
Arrival & The Addington
Arrive at Heathrow, where Tom Coyne and your driver will meet you at Arrivals. Board the coach for the short run to The Petersham in Richmond, your home for all six nights and perched above a bend in the Thames. Then it’s straight back out for an opening loop at The Addington, J.F. Abercromby’s 1913 oddity, where tee shots fire across ravines of heather to fairways you have to trust are out there. Enjoy an opening reception at the hotel, where captains will draft their teams for the week of matches ahead.
Monday, July 12
Walton Heath
Your first day of Coyne Cup action comes at Walton Heath, where Herbert Fowler laid the golf across open heath in 1904 and James Braid then stood as club professional for the next 46 years. The 1981 Ryder Cup was decided here, along with five European Opens and the 2023 Women’s British Open. Mind the heather, which does the work bunkers do elsewhere. Back to Richmond that evening to find your first pub of the week.
Tuesday, July 13
Sunningdale
Thirty-six holes at Sunningdale, both courses in a day, with the biggest points haul of the week on the table. Willie Park Jr. built the Old in 1901, and Harry Colt, then the club secretary, answered with the New in 1923. Playing them back to back settles a lot of arguments. Get your card in to the scorekeeper before dinner, then head back to Richmond with your legs suitably shortened.
Wednesday, July 14
Hankley Common
Check in on where the Cup tallies stand, then make for Hankley Common, which opened in 1897 and got its teeth later. James Braid built six new holes in the 1920s and Colt came back through in the 1930s to add three more. It runs close to 7,000 yards across protected heathland, and the heather is knee-high in July. Another evening in Richmond, where you’ve no doubt settled on a favorite pub by now.
Thursday, July 15
St. George’s Hill
St. George’s Hill started as a real estate development. A builder bought a thousand acres of Surrey woodland in 1911, hired Harry Colt to put a golf course through the middle of it, and sold houses with club memberships attached. Colt cleared the trees, found ridges and ravines underneath, and built the holes around them. Play hard, because the Cup is close now, and enjoy one last free evening in Richmond.
Friday, July 16
The Berkshire
The Cup comes down to The Berkshire, Herbert Fowler’s 1928 pair, where the Red runs to an unusual formula of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s and never lets a round settle into a rhythm. Your match could decide the whole thing. Enjoy a closing dinner and awards that evening, where the winning side will drink deeply from the Coyne Cup and the year’s most valuable Linksman or Linkswoman will take it home until the next one.
Saturday, July 17
London & Departure
Enjoy a final full English at The Petersham before the coach carries you back to Heathrow for flights home.

- TGJ members can place reservation requests from September 16 at 9 a.m. ET to September 23 at 9 a.m. ET.
- You may request up to four spots.
- Singles are encouraged to place reservation requests.
- Entries must be paid within 24 hours of receiving the notification email to avoid forfeiting your position in the event.
- To secure your spot if selected, a 50% deposit is required at the time of registration. The remaining balance (50%) will be due by April 1. You’ll receive a reminder email with a secure link to complete your final payment ahead of the due date.

How do I register?
- Registration opens September 16 at 9:00 AM ET and closes September 23 at 9:00 AM ET. The field is selected by random drawing.
- You must be a TGJ member and logged into golfersjournal.com to submit a reservation request. You can request up to four spots per entry.
- If selected, you’ll have 24 hours to complete payment. If you’re not selected, you’re automatically added to the waitlist. There is no set order, and spots are filled at random.

Who can attend?
- This event is open to TGJ members only.
- All guests in your group must also be active TGJ members. Spouses do not need to be TGJ members.
- Singles are welcome, and roughly half of our attendees come solo. All skill levels are encouraged to register.
What should I know before I arrive?
- The trip will begin by flying in to the London Heathrow Airport
- These course will be walking only.
- Caddies will be available upon request, pricing for caddies is between €70-€100 at each course.
- The dress code for golf rounds is private club attire. No denim, no sandals, and shirts must be tucked in. Hats are not permitted inside the clubhouse. Jackets are not required at dinner.

What if I need to cancel?
- Pricing is per person. Cancellations made more than 30 days before the event are subject to a 7% processing fee.
- Cancellations made within 30 days are subject to a 15% fee and will only be refunded once the spot is filled.
- If the spot cannot be filled, no refund will be issued.
