The 1950s ushered in a golden age of golf, hence this 1955 series of images with Audrey Hepburn and her then-husband, Mel Ferrer, at the Bürgenstock Hotel’s nine-hole course in Switzerland. While she wasn’t known as an avid player, the Academy Award winner and Breakfast at Tiffany’s star appeared in elegant golf course shoots throughout the 1950s and ’60s. (She is not to be confused with four-time Academy Award winner Katharine Hepburn—no relation—a true obsessive who competed on the Connecticut junior circuit and hung with the likes of Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen.)

Times and tastes change, but the golf course remains a celebrity playground: There were echoes of the Hepburn-Ferrer shoot in the Instagram shots of Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez celebrating their 2019 engagement with a round at Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas.

After all, as Hepburn proves, looking good with your putter is a timeless pose.
