Designed by amateur champions Jack Neville and Douglas Grant and opened in 1919, Pebble Beach Golf Links was built around a single idea: place as many holes as possible along the Monterey coastline. Six U.S. Opens later, it remains the most recognizable course in American golf, where the cliffs, the cypress trees and the crashing Pacific have served as backdrop to some of the game’s defining moments.
A few weeks after the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, TGJ Editor Tom Coyne arrived at sunrise for the BTS Tour’s stop at golf’s most storied address. Coyne has walked the links of Ireland, Scotland and America for his Course Called series, and now leads the editorial desk at TGJ. But the appeal of Pebble at first light needs no literary framing. Sit back and enjoy.
