Tobacco Road Golf Club

Where Rubber Meets the Road

TGJ x Tobacco Road
August 9, 2020

When the rain finally stopped, we barely noticed.

Five holes in and a muggy, North Carolina summer storm had forced the 80-plus Subscribers—who made the trip from as far as London and as near as Pinehurst—off the Mike Strantz marvel they came to see. We huddled around the modest cabin he called a clubhouse and waited.

For many, it was their first Tobacco Road experience. For others, it was as if they were home again. For all, the rain delay provided opportunities that foursomes otherwise wouldn’t: beers were cracked, stories were traded, future buddy trips planned, names were put to faces and Instagram handles.

On the backside of the cabin players took aim at the 18th green from a mat above the clubhouse steps. In the parking lot, a lucky few took refuge near the TGJ Van, fully stocked with, among other things, Carolina BBQ.

When the horn blew to return to a still-mint golf course, two hours had passed. It felt like 10 minutes.

Seen in the gallery below are the moments before and after the delay, like Liam Ainsworth (England) shooting 68 (-3) and sneaking out 27 Stableford points to take home the Low Gross victory. And Emory Hendrix (Greenville, SC), a 16-handicap, going out in a career-best 36 (+1) on the back. And Mark Stewart, the man who hired Mike Strantz to build him a golf course, smiling as if it were his first time seeing the joint.

Tobacco Road is a special golf course run by special people. Much like TGJ, it doesn’t need explanation—it needs to be experienced.

Thanks for making the trip—see you at our next event.
