Bump&Run: 5/30/22

Reflections on two weeks in the Broken Tee Society, two days at Inness, and one phenomenal global golfing community.

Bump&Run is the weekly recap of our members-only Discord server. Haven’t joined our server yet? Do so here: glfrsj.nl/BTSconnect

Checking inness

It feels like two months ago that Foster and the TGJ van rolled into Accord, NY for an Empire State doubleheader. The Broken Tee Society took over Inness for 48 hours last Sunday and Monday, and the only way to recap our time on this King-Collins rollercoaster is through the numbers (and of course, Christian Hafer’s photos):

  • 128 golfers
  • 54 holes
  • 7 greens–including one double (3 and 6) and one triple (2, 9, and the practice green)
  • 90 pins
  • 4 hearty meals
  • 2 distinct routings
  • 2 first-ever aces
  • 1 unforgettable golf playground
Inness Some thirty feet of tiers, shelves, and bowls separate the top of Inness’s par-three third green (foreground) from the bottom of its drive-and-pitch sixth (beyond)

Inness

Kathy Roberts kicked off Sunday’s round with an ace on the third – her second hole of the day, and the first ace of her career!

Inness The moment Brendan Holstead’s life changed forever. This punch-cut 5-wood from 190 found the bottom of the cup for Brendan’s first-ever ace–and the second in two days on hole No. 3.

Inness

The only thing that exceeded the golf at Inness was the hang.

"ee-kwahn-ick"

Don’t confuse Ekwanok, Vermont’s finest golf club, with its resort-course neighbor Equinox. The two share a designer in Walter Travis, but differ on almost everything else, including pronunciation.

A dozen BTS Members got the opportunity to test their games against Ekwanok’s rolling terrain and devilish putting surfaces on May 20th, and came away equal parts impressed and humbled. The outing was in support of AA, whose founder Bill Wilson grew up as an avid golfer and member of the club.

If post-round chatter is any indication, this sounds like it will become an annual affair. Many thanks to Member Peter Gannon for rallying the troops.

and speaking of meetups...

… we’re inching ever closer to October’s Broken Tee Society Bourbon Bash. A few spots remain on the trip, which you can sign up for within the dedicated Bourbon Bash channel on the server, or by sending a DM to Cody Davenport (@CodyDPDX).

In addition to teeing it up with fellow BTS Members and enjoying a variety of whiskey tastings in the cradle of American bourbon, the Bash crew will also be featured in future TGJ editorial – one more reason to grab a spot while they’re still available.

shipnuck talks phil - live on discord

You’d be hard-pressed to name an athlete who had a more explosive last 12 months than Phil Mickelson. And you’d come up empty trying to find a better reporter than Alan Shipnuck to recount all of Phil’s myriad headline-worthy antics.

Join us on Tuesday, June 7th as we welcome Alan to the BTS Main Stage for a wide-ranging chat on golf’s most mercurial superstar.

e-merch-ency

BTS Members got early access to two of TGJ’s most-requested merch items last week, seeing them before they hit social media or an email inbox. Supplies aren’t fully depleted yet, but we’d suggest you act fast.

After our spin around Inness, the BTS flew south for the week, checking in at Forth Worth’s Charles Schwab Challenge. TGJ Assistant Editor Casey Bannon snuck in a pro-am 18 with Earl Cooper and Olajuwon Ajanaku, founders of Eastside Golf and recent BTS podcast guests

Their fourth for the day was four-time PGA Tour winner Max Homa. Pretty solid group.

When the actual tournament started, BTS Member William Henderson (below) had the best seat in the house, having won the lottery for four free VIP tickets last week. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday!
